WebP to PNG: the choices behind the export.
WebP is convenient on the web, while PNG remains useful for editing tools, presentation software, and workflows that expect a familiar lossless raster file. This route makes that handoff locally. It keeps the source dimensions and can preserve transparency, while making the important limitation clear: a new lossless container cannot reconstruct detail that was already discarded before the WebP reached your browser.
Decode the source before choosing the container
PNG is useful when another application does not accept WebP or you need a lossless raster export for further editing. Transparent WebP pixels can remain transparent when alpha preservation is enabled. A PNG made from a lossy WebP still contains the source compression artifacts; converting it does not recover discarded detail.
A WebP file may carry lossy color data or a lossless bitstream. The decoder turns either representation into a grid of pixels. PNG then stores that decoded grid without adding the photographic quality loss of another JPEG-style encode. This distinction matters when a source already has ringing around lettering or smeared fine texture. Those features are now part of the decoded image; PNG will preserve them rather than repair them.
Transparency is a channel, not a background remover
PNG does not need the quality slider used for photographic encoders, so this route disables that control and starts with a full decoded-pixel export. The output retains the source pixel count. A 1,000-pixel-wide WebP does not become a higher-resolution image because it is saved as PNG. If you need another composition or exact print dimensions, finish that geometric task in the cropper instead of expecting format conversion to increase captured detail.
Keep transparency enabled when the WebP contains a cutout, a shadow, or an icon with transparent margins. PNG supports an alpha channel and can keep those decoded opacity values. An opaque WebP, however, stays opaque. This converter does not identify the subject, erase a white background, or invent missing pixels. Disable alpha only when you intentionally want a solid backing, then choose the background color before creating the final output.
Plan for a larger editing copy
File size can grow substantially because PNG and WebP make different compression tradeoffs. The measured output size is more useful than an extension-based expectation. A large PNG may be a sensible intermediate for editing while being an inefficient final asset for a page. Keep both roles in mind: preserve an editing copy where compatibility matters, and compare delivery formats separately when download weight becomes the main constraint.
The workspace validates the selected source pair and decodes the image in a local worker. Original metadata and embedded color profiles are not copied into the fresh output, and an animated WebP is treated as a still image. Inspect the saved PNG in the receiving application, especially around transparency and saturated brand colors. Keep the original WebP if you may need its animation or specialized metadata later, because those properties cannot be recovered from a static PNG export.
Three steps. A finished file.
Open your WebP source
Choose a WebP file on this device. The route checks its accepted input and prepares supported raster frames without sending the file to a processing service.
Review the PNG export choices
Keep or flatten transparency deliberately. PNG does not use a photographic quality slider; inspect the decoded source dimensions and any available frame outputs.
Save a separate PNG copy
Check the preview, actual output dimensions, and measured byte size. Download the result and inspect it in the receiving application while retaining the source file.
A little clarity.
Can a PNG recover detail from a lossy WebP?
No. PNG avoids adding another lossy encoding step, but the pixels already decoded from a lossy source still contain its artifacts. Higher file size does not mean recovered original detail.
Will WebP animation become an animated PNG?
No. This route produces a single raster still. Keep the original animation and use a dedicated animation workflow if frame timing or motion is important.
Why does the PNG quality slider stay disabled?
PNG export is lossless relative to the browser-decoded pixels and does not use the photographic quality control exposed for JPEG or WebP. Its size depends on the pixel content and dimensions.
