HEIC to PNG: the choices behind the export.
Choose PNG when you need the raster pixels decoded from a HEIC without adding a second photographic quality loss. This converter prepares that handoff locally and reports the actual dimensions and file size of each result. The new file is a conventional still image, not a replacement for every feature of the original camera container. Keep the HEIC as a master when depth, motion, or specialized camera information matters.
Lossless export begins after HEIC decoding
PNG preserves the decoded raster pixels without adding a second lossy encoding stage. It cannot restore detail already discarded by the HEIC source. Expect a larger file than the original photograph. A multi-image HEIC container can produce several separate PNG downloads; it does not recreate an Apple Live Photo or preserve depth maps.
The HEIC decoder first reconstructs supported image frames. PNG then stores those decoded raster pixels without the additional lossy encoding step a JPEG export would require. This is a useful distinction for an editing handoff, but it does not reverse compression already present in the HEIC source. Detail omitted during capture or earlier encoding remains absent. A larger PNG therefore should not be interpreted as a more detailed reconstruction of the original scene.
Handle image frames without promising motion
The PNG output has no photographic quality setting. Its size follows the decoded content and dimensions, and a high-resolution photo can create a substantially larger file than its compact HEIC container. The workspace caps practical file and pixel budgets so the browser is not asked to maintain an unlimited collection of large raster results. Process a manageable selection, save the copies you need, and preserve the original camera files outside this transient page session.
A supported multi-image container may expose several raster frames. Those become individually named PNG outputs, and the workspace offers a ZIP when more than one result is present. Separate still images are not an animated reconstruction. Live Photo motion, camera depth information, HDR metadata, and the original profile or EXIF container do not survive this raster export. If another application needs those properties, transfer the original HEIC rather than assuming a PNG bundle can replace it.
Budget storage and compatibility deliberately
HEIC support comes from a lazily loaded local decoder worker. The decoder cannot provide a trustworthy percentage or a public API for interrupting a decode already in progress. The interface shows a truthful working stage, bounds how long it waits, and discards late results after cancellation. No server receives the file as a compatibility fallback. Unsupported variants fail with an actionable local message so you can try an export from the originating photo application.
Review the saved PNG in the editor or publishing system where it will be used. Check orientation, saturated colors, dimensions, and storage size. PNG can be a reasonable intermediate when another image edit follows, while being unnecessarily heavy for final web delivery. If you later choose JPEG or WebP for distribution, make that quality decision from a retained master rather than repeatedly converting an already reduced delivery copy. The format change solves compatibility; it does not make source preservation unnecessary.
Three steps. A finished file.
Open your HEIC source
Choose a HEIC file on this device. The route checks its accepted input and prepares supported raster frames without sending the file to a processing service.
Review the PNG export choices
Keep or flatten transparency deliberately. PNG does not use a photographic quality slider; inspect the decoded source dimensions and any available frame outputs.
Save a separate PNG copy
Check the preview, actual output dimensions, and measured byte size. Download the result and inspect it in the receiving application while retaining the source file.
A little clarity.
Is HEIC to PNG lossless relative to the camera original?
It avoids adding a lossy encoding after the local decoder reconstructs pixels. It does not restore information removed by the HEIC encoding or preserve all camera-container features.
Why can a HEIC produce several PNG files?
Some containers expose multiple supported image frames. They receive separate filenames and can be downloaded together. This does not preserve Live Photo timing or recreate an animated camera asset.
Why is the PNG much larger than the HEIC photo?
High-efficiency photographic storage and PNG use different compression models. A decoded high-resolution photograph may need considerably more PNG storage without gaining any new captured detail.
